Raising a middle schooler can be hard. This Parent Toolkit video gives tips to support your tween’s overall development by supporting their critical thinking skills, encouraging restful sleep, and building healthy relationships.

Five Minutes to Spare - Middle School

KATE SNOW, reporting:

Raising a middle schooler can be hard! But in five minutes or less, you can still help support your tween’s development. Your tween probably has a lot of opinions, so ask for them! Ask about what motivates characters in a book or TV show, as this helps develop critical thinking skills. And when your child starts getting ready for bed, take a few minutes and remove or turn off digital devices. Unplugging is a great way to encourage a restful sleep. Use the time you're unplugging to talk about put downs and put ups. Did your tween hear a friend making fun of a classmate? Instead of putting that student down, ask what could have been said instead. Talking about put-ups can encourage healthy relationships and interactions, at a time when kids often begin to feel peer pressure and experience bullying.
