Why is it important for kids and parents to eat a variety of colors of fruits and vegetables? This Parent Toolkit video answers that question and offers tips for picky eaters.

A Rainbow a Day

ERICA HILL, reporting:

A candy company once used the phrase “taste the rainbow,” but should kids eat a rainbow every day?

Actually, yes! But not in color-coated sugar form.  Fruits and vegetables come in a variety of colors - essentially a healthy rainbow. Phytonutrients - or the chemicals that give fruits and vegetables their colors - have lots of health benefits, from keeping the heart healthy to helping the body make new cells, and even boosting immunity so the body can better fight the common cold - fruits and veggies are powerhouse foods.  And did you know purple - or blue - fruits and vegetables are actually brain boosters? They can help improve memory.  So what if your child doesn’t like carrots? Sweet potatoes will do the trick. Not into beets? Try baked purple potato fries. Eating a variety of colors - a rainbow a day - is a great way to help your child grow up healthy.
