What do a baseball, a golf ball, a deck of cards and a woman’s fist have to do with healthy eating? This video, produced by the Parent Toolkit, explains and also gives tips for remembering serving sizes at any time.

Serving Sizes Simplified

ERICA HILL, reporting:

What do a baseball, a golf ball, a deck of cards and a woman’s fist have to do with eating healthy? Let’s start at the beginning. For a balanced diet, the USDA recommends eating from each food group every day - with half your plate being fruits and vegetables. To get all the nutrients they need to grow up healthy, kids should eat the right amounts of food - which are measured in cups or ounces, depending on the food group. But how much is a cup? Thirty-two seedless grapes or 12 baby carrots. And an ounce equals 1 cup of cereal or one-fourth cup of beans. But no one has time to memorize a serving size for every food.  How can you remember? Try to keep in mind - an ounce of protein, like salmon, is about the size of a golf ball. A serving of meat, or 3 ounces, is the size of a deck of playing cards. And a cup is about the size of a baseball or a woman’s fist.
