Why is too much sodium in a child’s diet a problem? This video, produced by the Parent Toolkit, explains and also tells you where the most sodium in a child’s diet is found.

What’s the Deal with Sodium?

ERICA HILL reporting:

We often hear that we should reduce the amount of sodium in our diet. But why? Too much sodium, and salt, in the diet can lead to higher blood pressure, which is a leading risk factor for heart disease. Sodium and salt are often used interchangeably but sodium is actually a part of salt. About ninety percent of u-s children eat too much sodium. But it doesn't come from the salt shaker. Sodium is found in many restaurant meals and packaged products like chips and crackers. And the leading culprit for sodium in a child’s diet is actually one of their favorites -pizza! But did also you know that a child's taste for salt is developed over time? By cutting back sodium now, you can help your child like the taste less. So next time you want a pizza night - try making your own pies for a lower sodium meal. Whole wheat English muffins make the perfect starter for individual pizzas - add healthy toppings and get the whole family eating better.
