Whether it’s putting toys away, getting ready for bed, or helping out around the house, sometimes it's hard to get kids to listen. This Parent Toolkit video offers advice on how to capture their attention consistently.

Are You Listening?

PETER ALEXANDER, reporting:

It’s a common parent frustration: kids ignoring what you say. Whether it’s putting toys away, getting ready for bed, or helping out around the house, sometimes it feels like we need a megaphone to get our kids to listen. The next time you find yourself on the verge of yelling, keep yourself calm. Use a firm, but calm, voice and tell your kids what to do instead of what NOT to do. Instead of “no running inside” say “inside we use walking feet.” Try using “when/then” with your kids. “When you’ve cleaned up the dishes, then you can go play.” Say it the same way every time. And be stick to your word. If you say no TV until homework is done, or toys that aren't picked up will be put away for a week, don’t budge. When your kids know you will follow through, they’ll be more likely to believe you.
