If you're stuck in traffic, there are still ways to beat the summer slide. This video, produced by the Parent Toolkit, explains a number of made-for-travel games to play on the road.

Road Trip Tips

NATALIE MORALES, reporting:

Summer time often means vacations and that can mean long car rides for many families. But that car time could be the remedy to kids losing important math and English skills while they’re out of school. By trying new games - you can pass the travel time AND help keep your child’s mind active. For example, try seeing how many red cars on the road your family can count. To make the game more challenging, keep a tally of blue cars and see how many more or less there are than red. Want to build your child’s vocabulary? A game of “eye spy” is a great way to build language skills. Find items that begin with a certain letter - like T. It can be found on license plates, signs, or even as at the first letter when spelling “Tree.” Older kids can get creative with storytelling by taking license plate letters and making sentences. The license plate “NJC124” could become “Nina juggles carrots." Keeping a handful of fun games in mind can help pass the time on the road while also giving everyone a little brain boost.
