As parents, we know there are consequences for our actions. But children develop their decision-making skills over time. Learn how to support your child’s problem solving and decision-making strategies with this Parent Toolkit video.

Tips to Support Decision-Making

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, reporting:

As parents, we know about consequences to choices. Forget to set the alarm? You're late for work. Need to visit grandma? How will the family get there? Car, train, or plane? Adults make decisions every day, but learning to make decisions and solve problems is something kids need to learn over time, and you can help! The next time your child breaks a friends' toy, or leaves a mess at the neighbor's, have them write an apology letter before borrowing or visiting again. Making amends can teach younger kids about consequences to choices. For teens, get them involved in planning. Is the family car in the shop? Ask them to help you figure out how to get everyone to school, practice and work. And don't always stick with the first solution. Realizing there are multiple ways to solve the same problem will help your teen further develop decision-making skills.
