NBC Learn K-12 Subscriber Spotlight: NBC Learn as a Powerful Research Tool

Posted on 03/01/2016 08:09 AM

Marilyn Hewson is a technology coordinator at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Slidell, Louisiana. Through 42 years of teaching – the past 18 as tech coordinator – Hewson hunts for new and innovative resources to help engage her students. She discovered NBC Learn K-12 two years ago and it has found a permanent place in her classroom.

Hewson encourages her students to browse NBC Learn for current events videos, which are updated on the website every day, Monday through Friday. Students also dive further into the resource by using keyword searches in order to find real world stories relevant to their lives.

“Allowing the students the privilege of independent research and learning has proven to excite, encourage, and provide a positive approach to learning for preparation for high school and college,” Hewson says.

Hewson asks her students to use NBC Learn as a research tool to find stories that fit the topics they are discussing in other classes, or to discuss important issues in her class, such as cyberbullying. She even incorporated NBC Learn videos into her plans for Red Ribbon Week, a nationwide initiative dedicated to fighting drug and alcohol abuse. Hewson asked her students to find three to four videos related to Red Ribbon Week and present the choices to their classmates, generating discussion among their peers. She finds it fascinating how each class has its own concerns about the topic and chooses different NBC Learn videos to discuss. “[My students] like it so much, they just want to go look for other things that are going on.”

Many of Hewson’s students spend their free time in class browsing NBC Learn for more videos to keep themselves up to date. Hewson believes that this mix of independent and group research has not just made her curriculum more engaging for her students, it has fostered a positive approach to learning. She adds Internet research components to her exams, which generally ask students to use NBC Learn. She finds that NBC Learn helps improve reading comprehension, memory recall, typing skills, and writing skills. She also asks her students to use the citation generator on the back of each CueCard media player to teach them the importance of citing their sources.

“With education changing each day in the world of technology, I am so grateful that NBC Learn has contributed a major part of keeping our students constantly challenged.”
