Summertime can be a great way to take advantage of your local parks and community organizations while also keeping kids from sitting in front of the TV all day. This video, produced by the Parent Toolkit, offers some ideas for keeping kids active and healthy.

Keeping Kids Active

NATALIE MORALES , reporting:

Did you know kids can gain weight two to three times faster over the summer months? Not only is eating healthy important, but activity also plays a key part in keeping kids healthy this summer. Experts recommend one hour or more of activity every day. So how can you keep your kid from sitting in front of the TV or playing video games all summer? Try swimming lessons! Summer is a great time to take advantage of public pools, lakes and oceans. Many local parks offer free lessons for a fun and safe way for kids to get active. If you want more than swimming, many parks and community programs also offer free activities like hiking or basketball games for kids. Some even have all-day camps that combine exercise and outdoor education. And make exercise a part of your family time. Take family walks after dinner or in the morning before breakfast or head outdoors for a picnic and game of tag. By making exercise a routine part of family gatherings, you’re prioritizing activities that boost everyone’s health.
