Building Social Skills

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, reporting:

Did you know that 54% of parents say good social and communication skills are the MOST important skill for their child's future success? You might think those skills come naturally, and sometimes they do. But these skills can also be taught at any age. For younger kids, simply learning to meet a new person can build social skills. Show how to shake hands and end with "it was nice to meet you." And for older kids, ask questions that need more than one word to answer. Instead of "how was school?" ask "what was the best thing that happened at school today?" By asking good questions, you're showing how to continue a conversation that could otherwise be over. Finally, don't forget to be a good example. Put down your phone and make eye contact. And don't forget to stop talking too! Listening is just as important as talking when building social skills.
